Sports & play

Whether you're 9 or 99, taking part in a sport or fun activity is a fantastic way connect with people in your community. Across Northumberland, there are plenty of excuses to get out of the house and get and active. Whether it starting a new hobby with a local sports club, taking a dip in one of our council ran leisure centres or keeping busy during half-term, there is no shortage of opportunities to get involved and get active.

  • Our leisure centres are places for people and communities to thrive. Whether you’re swimming lengths in the pool or cycling in the studio, Places Leisure Centres help you stay connected and fit - together.

  • On the lookout for local football groups, or a boxing club to beat the rest? Discover your sporty side and community spirit by joining a sport activity group near you.

  • Kielder Waterside is home to Britian’s most beautiful marathon in October.  In 2025, we offered Northumberland children to take part in the event’s junior races at no cost to them or their families.

  • Sporty, fresh-air fun for you! PlayZones are outdoor spaces to meet up with mates and play together. Arrange a game of basketball, football or netball, or even just time to meet socially.

  • After a hardworking term, half-term activities bring fun, freedom and the chance to take part in something new. Children that receive free school meals can access vouchers for half-term activities through our Holiday Activity Fund.
